Fischer Speaker Series Recording Available | The Future of Learning and the Tools That Will Support It featuring George Siemens & Dragan Gasevic

Originally Held: January 9, 2015

This is an exciting time for learning, teaching, and the technologies that will support learning and teaching. Learning through and with online tools is growing and evolving rapidly. New tools that support learners, content providers, credentialing organizations, instructional designers, and others educational professionals are emerging and under development, and the financial support for innovations in Ed Tech has quintupled in recent years.

In this COIL Fischer Speaker Series recording, we hear from two leaders in the evolution of online learning. Dr. George Siemens (with Stephen Downes) offered what is considered by most to be the first Massive Open Online Course (MOOC). He is currently serving as Professor and Executive Director of the “Learning Innovation & Networked Knowledge (LINK) Research Lab” at the University of Texas Arlington, and is Co-founder and President of the Society for Learning Analytics Research.

Dr. Dragan Gasevic is a Professor and Canada Research Chair in Semantic and Learning Technologies in the School of Computing and Information Systems at Athabasca University. Drs. Siemens and Gasevic are both experts in “big data / data analytics,” and are working together on the development of “ProSolo,” a new software platform to support and connect learners in personalized, competency-based online learning.

In this session they convey their impressions of what the future holds in store for learning technologies, think with us about what learners will need from institutions and tools, and help us identify and consider opportunities to serve tomorrow’s learners and to develop new tools with which to do so.
